As many as 50 percent of U. S. men have erectile dysfunction, according to a new study published in the
Journal of Sexual Medicine.Researchers found that among the male population of Florida, erectile dysfunction is more common than any other sexual activity. That's because there are more men with the condition and not necessarily the same types of sexual activity as those who do not have it.
The new study, from University College of Florida College of Medicine, analyzed data from a survey that sought to understand the health and risk factors associated with erectile dysfunction among men attending the University of Florida Health Department of Medicine's Sexual Medicine Program. A questionnaire is designed to collect information on erectile dysfunction, symptoms, causes, treatment, medications, and sexual history.
"This study provides the most comprehensive study of this condition since Viagra was created in the 1990s," said study co-author Dr. John D. Leopold, director of the Sexual Medicine Program at the University of Florida.
The primary objective was to determine if men who have erectile dysfunction have a more aggressive sexual response, a more frequent and severe form of sexual arousal, and/or a less aggressive sexual response.
Participants were invited to fill out a questionnaire on erectile dysfunction and other health conditions for the past year, including the following: heart problems; high blood pressure; diabetes; liver or kidney problems; and prostate problems.
Participants were asked to complete the survey and a questionnaire was administered.
The results showed that erectile dysfunction is more common in men with the condition. Men with the condition also have more aggressive sexual responses, with the most frequent forms being impotence and sexual arousal disorders. In addition, men with the condition also have more severe and frequent sexual problems, including a history of diabetes and high cholesterol, and/or a history of heart problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease.
Dr. Leopold said the study was a first step in developing a treatment plan to treat erectile dysfunction. He said he was excited about the study because of its small sample size and the high number of men who did not have erectile dysfunction.
The findings of this study also help protect men from developing sexual problems for which they would otherwise have no treatment options. And the study also shows that men who have erectile dysfunction have fewer health problems associated with it.
"The new study suggests that men who have erectile dysfunction might be at a higher risk of developing sexual problems," Dr. Leopold said.
